Basra Strategy Guide
Tips and Tactics to Win at Basra
Jack and 7β¦ Timing
Jacks and the 7β¦ are your most powerful cards β they sweep the entire floor. Timing their use is the key to high scores.
- Save Jacks for when the floor has many cards, especially valuable ones (10β¦, 2β£, Aces). A Jack sweeping 8+ cards can swing the game.
- Use a Jack or 7β¦ to score a Basra when the floor has cards β clearing the floor earns you 10 bonus points on top of the captured cards.
- Don't waste a Jack on a floor with just 1-2 low-value cards. Those cards aren't worth burning your best weapon.
Floor Management
What you leave on the floor matters as much as what you capture.
- Avoid leaving cards that are easy for your opponent to match. If you drop a 5, check if your opponent might have a 5 to capture it.
- Leave cards whose values don't easily sum to common ranks. Odd totals are harder to match.
- Pay attention to the floor before playing β sometimes a 'no capture' play sets up a bigger capture on your next turn.
Setting Up Basra Opportunities
A Basra (clearing the floor) is worth 10 points. Set yourself up for Basras by controlling the floor.
- If the floor has one or two cards you can match, capture them to leave the floor empty β that's a Basra!
- After your opponent dumps a card (no capture), you may be able to match it immediately for a Basra.
- Keep track of when you'll have Jacks available. If a Jack is coming up in your next hand, let the floor build up.
Card Counting
In a 52-card deck, there are 4 of each rank. Track how many of each rank have been played. If all four 7s are gone, no one can capture by matching a 7 anymore. This helps you predict whether your opponent can capture specific floor cards, and whether it's safe to dump certain cards.
Protecting Valuable Cards
Some cards are worth extra points. Prioritize capturing them:
- The 10β¦ (Big Ten) is worth 3 points. If it's on the floor, prioritize capturing it. Never dump the 10β¦ if you can avoid it.
- The 2β£ (Small Two) is worth 2 points. Capture it when possible.
- Jacks and Aces are each worth 1 point. Capturing all 4 Jacks gives you 4 points plus their sweep power.
Defensive Dumps
Sometimes you must dump a card with no capture. Choose wisely:
- Dump low-value cards (3, 4, 5) that are less likely to be captured individually.
- Avoid dumping cards that match existing floor cards β your opponent will capture both.
- Never dump the 10β¦ or 2β£ unless absolutely necessary.
Common Mistakes
- Playing Jacks too early β sweeping 1-2 low cards wastes your best resource.
- Ignoring the 10β¦ β the Big Ten is worth 3 points and should be a priority capture.
- Not counting cards β knowing what ranks are left helps you plan captures and dumps.
- Dumping matching cards β dropping a 6 when there's a 6 on the floor hands your opponent a free capture.
