What is Mancala?

Mancala (ู…ู†ู‚ู„ุฉ), also called Mangala, is one of the oldest games in human history โ€” with archaeological evidence dating back over 7,000 years. Played across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, Mancala involves strategically sowing seeds (or stones) around a board of pits, trying to capture as many seeds as possible in your store. The Kalah variant featured here uses a board with two rows of six pits and two stores. Despite its simple rules, Mancala rewards deep strategic thinking, counting ahead, and setting up chain moves. It's a living piece of human cultural heritage.

How to Play Mancala

Mancala is a seed-counting strategy game:

  1. Setup: Place 4 seeds in each of the 12 pits. Each player owns the 6 pits on their side and the store at their right end. Total: 48 seeds.
  2. Sow: Pick up all seeds from one of your pits. Drop them one-by-one counter-clockwise into consecutive pits, including your store but skipping the opponent's store.
  3. Special Rules: If your last seed lands in your store, take another turn. If your last seed lands in an empty pit on your side, capture that seed plus all seeds in the opposite pit.
  4. Win: The game ends when one side is empty. Remaining seeds go to that player's store. The player with more than 24 seeds (out of 48) wins.
