Tips and Tactics to Win at Arabic Backgammon

Opening Moves

The opening roll sets the tone for the entire game. Strong opening moves establish control of key points and begin building a prime.

  • 6-1: Make your bar point (point 7) β€” one of the strongest opening moves, creating a prime alongside point 6.
  • 3-1: Make your 5 point β€” a key strategic point that anchors your home board.
  • 6-5: Run a back checker from point 24 to point 13 β€” start the race early.

Building Primes

A prime is a wall of consecutive blocked points (2+ checkers each). A 6-point prime is unpassable β€” any opponent checker behind it is trapped. Build your prime starting from points 4-7 and extend it. Even a 3-point prime severely limits your opponent's options.

When to Hit

Hitting opponent blots is powerful but not always correct:

  • Hit in your home board whenever possible β€” the opponent will struggle to re-enter if you control multiple home board points.
  • Avoid hitting when it leaves you exposed in a dangerous area. Hit-and-cover (hitting then covering the blot) is ideal.
  • In a racing game where you're ahead, avoid unnecessary hits that bring the opponent's checker back into play.

Racing vs. Holding Strategy

When you're ahead in the pip count (fewer pips to bear off), race β€” move checkers home quickly without engaging. When you're behind, play a holding game β€” maintain anchors in the opponent's home board and wait for a chance to hit.

Bearing Off Tips

Efficient bearing off can be the difference between winning and losing:

  • Spread your checkers evenly across your home board β€” gaps waste dice rolls.
  • Bear off whenever possible rather than moving within the home board.
  • If the opponent has checkers on the bar, keep your home board as closed as possible.

Pip Counting

Your pip count is the total number of points your checkers need to travel to bear off. Knowing both players' pip counts tells you who's winning the race. If you're 20+ pips ahead, race aggressively. If you're behind, play defensively and look for hitting opportunities.

Common Mistakes

  1. Stacking too many checkers on one point β€” it wastes moves and makes your position inflexible.
  2. Leaving blots in your home board β€” getting hit there is devastating as you lose ground in the race.
  3. Running too early when behind β€” if you're losing the race, keep anchors and wait for hitting chances.
  4. Not closing your home board when the opponent is on the bar β€” a closed board means they can't re-enter.
