Hearts Strategy Guide

Tips and Tactics to Win at Hearts

Passing Strategy

The 3-card pass at the start of each round is your first strategic decision. Use it wisely to improve your hand and create favorable conditions.

  • Pass the Queen of Spades if you don't have enough low spades (below Q) to protect it.
  • Pass high hearts (Aโ™ฅ, Kโ™ฅ, Qโ™ฅ) to reduce your risk of capturing heart tricks.
  • Pass high cards in short suits to create voids โ€” being void in a suit lets you dump penalty cards when that suit is led.
  • When passing right, be more cautious โ€” that player leads after you and can force you to play.

Creating Voids

A void (having no cards in a suit) is extremely powerful in Hearts. When a suit you're void in is led, you can discard any card โ€” including the Qโ™  or high hearts. Focus your passing on creating at least one void.

Queen of Spades Management

The Qโ™  is worth 13 points, making it the single most dangerous card. Managing it is crucial:

  • If you hold Qโ™  with few spades, pass it immediately. You need 3+ low spades to safely guard it.
  • If you don't have Qโ™ , try to flush it out by leading spades. The holder will be forced to play it eventually.
  • Track who has the Qโ™ . If it hasn't appeared, be cautious about winning tricks in spades.

When to Shoot the Moon

Shooting the moon (taking all 26 penalty points) is a dramatic play that can swing the game. Consider it when:

  • You have a very strong hand with high cards across multiple suits, especially Aโ™ , Kโ™ , and high hearts.
  • You're behind in score and need a big play to catch up. The risk is worth it when you're losing anyway.
  • Watch out โ€” experienced opponents will try to take just one heart to block your moon shot. Commit fully or abandon early.

Counting Cards

Keep track of which cards have been played, especially in hearts and spades. Knowing how many hearts remain and whether the Qโ™  has been played helps you make better decisions about when to play high cards safely.

Defensive Play

The core of Hearts strategy is avoiding penalty cards:

  • Lead low cards in non-heart suits to let others win the trick safely.
  • When following suit, play just below the current winning card when possible โ€” let someone else take the trick.
  • If you suspect someone is shooting the moon, take one heart early to block them. It's worth 1 point to prevent 26.

Common Mistakes

  1. Holding the Aโ™  or Kโ™  without passing them โ€” these cards attract the Qโ™ .
  2. Breaking hearts too early when you have many hearts โ€” this helps no one.
  3. Not paying attention to voids โ€” opponents dumping penalty cards is a major source of points.
  4. Ignoring a potential moon shot โ€” if one player is taking all the penalty cards, intervene immediately.
