Estimation Strategy Guide

Improve your Estimation game with these proven strategies and tips.

Bidding Strategy

Accurate bidding is the foundation of Estimation. The goal is not to win the most tricks β€” it's to win exactly the number you bid.

Bidding with Small Hands (1-4 cards)

With few cards, bidding is more straightforward. Bid 1 if you hold an Ace or King of trump. Bid 0 if your cards are low and off-suit. With just 1 card, bid 1 only if it's a high trump card, otherwise bid 0. In 2-3 card hands, count your guaranteed winners (Aces, high trump) and bid that number.

Bidding with Large Hands (8-13 cards)

Larger hands require more nuanced evaluation. Count your Aces (likely winners), Kings in long suits (probable winners), and trump cards above average. A good formula: bid = Aces + high trump cards + (trump length - 3)/2 for long trump suits. Be conservative β€” it's better to underbid by 1 than to overbid.

Bidding Zero

Bidding 0 is a valid and often smart strategy, especially with weak hands. The reward is 10 points β€” the same as bidding 1. However, playing to win zero tricks requires discipline: you must dump high cards carefully, avoid winning tricks accidentally, and never lead with a winning card. It gets harder with larger hands.

Trump Management

Trump cards are powerful tools that can both win and lose you tricks:

  • If you've already met your bid, avoid playing trump β€” you don't want to accidentally win more tricks.
  • Use trump strategically to win exactly the tricks you need. Don't waste high trump on tricks you don't need.
  • In the no-trump round (round 13), Aces and Kings become even more powerful since there's no trump to override them.

Playing to Your Bid

Once bidding is done, the challenge is hitting your exact number:

  • If you still need tricks, play aggressively β€” lead with Aces and high cards to secure your remaining tricks early.
  • If you've already met your bid, switch to defensive play β€” lead low cards, throw away high cards on tricks others are winning.
  • Watch the trick count carefully. Know exactly how many more tricks you need at all times.

Reading Opponents

Since it's every player for themselves, reading the table is crucial:

  • Track how many tricks each player has won vs their bid. Players who've met their bid will try to lose β€” exploit this by leading suits they must follow with high cards.
  • Watch for players bidding 0 β€” they'll try to dump high cards. Don't help them by leading low.
  • The dealer's restricted bid often reveals information about their hand strength. Use this to your advantage.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these frequent pitfalls in Estimation:

  1. Overbidding: Being too optimistic about your hand. Queens and Jacks are not guaranteed winners.
  2. Not adjusting play: Continuing to play aggressively after meeting your bid, accidentally winning extra tricks.
  3. Ignoring trump: Forgetting that trump cards can upset your plans. Always account for the trump suit when bidding.
  4. Neglecting the zero bid: Passing up easy 10-point rounds. Bidding 0 with weak hands is often the best play.
